Acquisition of property at 5230 N Lincoln Ave for redevelopment as three-to-six month shelter for homeless with wraparound health services as part of Stabilization Housing Pilot Program
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Alderman Vasquez have proposed an ordinance to acquire the former Diplomat Hotel for the Stabilization Housing Pilot Program. This program, a response to COVID, aims to provide transitional housing and services to vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness. The hotel will be renovated to accommodate up to 40 rooms, including quarantine units, and will provide medical and social services on-site. The City Council has authorized negotiations for the purchase of the hotel and, if necessary, the use of eminent domain. The proposed purchase price for the Diplomat Motel is $2,900,000. The ordinance aligns with a redevelopment plan approved by the City Council in 1999 for the Lincoln Avenue Tax Increment Financing Redevelopment Project Area.
