Call for Clemency Investigations, Inc. to investigate claims of innocence filed by inmates claiming incarceration due to coerced confessions via use of torture
Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge was fired for torturing detainees to coerce confessions. The Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission, established in response, received several inmates' torture claims and claims of actual innocence. Since 1989, 141 wrongful homicide convictions in Cook County were exonerated. Clemency Investigations Inc., a 601c¢3 nonprofit, will investigate these innocence claims, overseen by the Committee on Public Safety, with full cooperation from the police, including access to original files.
